Restoring Your Toyota Starlet

One of the most popular and enduring Japanese cars to be found on the road is the Toyota Starlet.  From 1973 to 1999 Toyota produced this compact car and exported it all over the world.  Because the newest Starlet is now ten years old, many people want to restore their vehicle and return it to the best possible operating condition they can.  Toyotas are known for their longevity and reliability, and with the current economy being so questionable and gas pricing fluctuating it is no wonder people are relying on their older cars that are so efficient.

There are quite a few things you need to consider when you restore this Japanese car.  You want to enjoy driving the car, and if that is reason for the restoration work then you do not need to load it up with expensive and rare parts.  The first thing you need to decide on is whether or not you want to restore your Toyota Starlet yourself or use a mechanic who is versed in restoring cars.  Restoring the car is going to cost money, that is a given, but whether the money is given to a professional or you take your time doing it yourself get ready to lay out some money.

There are three things you need to keep in mind when using a mechanic to restore your Toyota Starlet.  The first thing is to make sure you understand what the shop can and cannot do.  The Starlet is no longer a common car on the market, and your local shop may not have the expertise to restore it the way you want it.  Research the mechanic and what they do know before committing to using their services to fix up your car.  You want to make sure the mechanic that will be doing the work knows what they are doing.

The next thing you should do is talk to some of the shop’s other customers to make sure the quality of the work meets your standards.  Do not be afraid to ask the shop owners for references from customers who have had similar work done to their vehicles.  Remember, you are paying out your own hard earned money to have this work done.  If previous customers have not been happy with the work, then you will not be either.

Finally, ask the shop for a price quote on the work so that you understand exactly what you are paying for.  If you have questions about anything on the quote, make them explain it to you.  Have them show you on your car what they are talking about.  The mechanic will charge you for their time as well as the materials needed, so it is important to find one that is honest and does good work.  If you are not happy with the quote then consider what you can do to restore your car yourself to save yourself some time.
